Zimbabwe is a country situated in the Southern part of Africa. It is home to one of the seven wonders of the world and is very rich in culture. Since 2002, the economy of Zimbabwe has declined drastically. Because of this many people have emigrated in an effort to earn a living. This has caused a breakdown in family structures as married couples live apart and parents are not there to raise their children. These children have little adult guidance and start engaging in risky sexual behavior at an early age. The high unemployment rate (80%) has left many people, mostly youths, resorting to illegal or dangerous means in order to earn money. Many women, young and old, are engaging in prostitution and multiple partner relationships. All this contributes towards the high prevalence of HIV in the country.

Family Impact In Zimbabwe

F.I. was established in Zimbabwe in 2001. F.I Zimbabwe is divided into four departments which run various programs designed to respond to HIV & AIDS by spreading the supremacy of God in family life and relationships.

Families for Life

This forms the heart of the organizations structure and includes projects that emphasize the importance of the family as God intended it to be and its significance for social transformation.

Men

The Men’s department addresses family problems from the perspective of men who are often the income earners and heads of households. Programs for men are presented in workplaces, churches and community meetings to highlight the importance of family in fighting HIV & AIDS.

Women

Projects in this department are designed to empower women for their multiple roles as wives, mothers and in the market place. Health issues, especially Sexual Reproductive Health, have a major impact in the quality of life of Zimbabwean women. Solutions are explored in a non-threatening manner that involves the men in the communities.

Children and Youth

This department currently runs the most programs to cater for the wide needs of children and young people. With a strong life-skills thread running through them, projects cover student leadership, health, education, children’s rights and even access to legal representation.
